ENTRANCE EXAMINATION AND REGISTRATION
The entrance examination periods are in the first two weeks and final two weeks of each semester (an entrance examination can also be arranged in advance partway through the semester). Please fill out the application form for the entrance examination in advance and send it along with a short CV to our email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
Please bring the music for the pieces you are going to play/sing, your passport and either the entrance examination fee in cash OR CONFIRMATION THAT YOU HAVE PAID THE FEE VIA BANK TRANSFER along with you to the exam. We kindly ask candidates to dress smartly for the entrance examination. Please note that only Western musical instruments are accepted.
For the Artistic Diploma entrance examination in Classical or Jazz Instruments/Vocals, a candidate must prepare 3-4 pieces which best display his/her current ability. For certain Artistic Diploma courses – e.g. Opera / Operatic Repertoire / Operetta / Musical Theatre / Conducting / Rehearsal Accompaniment / Compositional Technique / Songwriting / Composition – more detailed requirements will be sent to the candidate via email after the receipt of their application. After passing the entrance examination, the candidate is then graded into the appropriate level within the overall study programme.
Candidates for the entrance examinations for the Pedagogical Diplomas in Instrumental / Vocal Pedagogy must receive a grading which is within the core study level ("Hauptstudium") in order to be accepted as a student. The candidate is then graded appropriately within the core study level according to their ability. Furthermore, the Pedagogical Diploma courses require excellent knowledge of German.
Registration can take place immediately after a successful entrance examination. Please bring along your passport and 2 passport-sized photographs. If applicable, you can also bring written proof of previous musical studies (e.g. study certificates from higher education institutes), with an accredited translation into either English or German if necessary. The registration involves filling out and signing a registration contract as well as making an advance payment of €1050 for the tuition fees for the first semester (= first 5 months of teaching), along with the registration fee of €100, amounting to €2200 in total.
PLEASE NOTE: If the grading at the entrance examination is lower than "Oberstufe 1" (Upper Level 1), a candidate can only be accepted as a student at Prayner with the direct approval of Director!
DURATION OF STUDIES & STUDY PLAN
The duration of most courses at Prayner from the beginning of the core study period ("Hauptstudium") is usually 6 years (core studies in Jazz, Opera, Conducting, Composition or in Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy typically last 4 years). The overall duration of study may be shortened depending on the grading received at the entrance exam. The minimum duration of study for all students at Prayner before graduating with the Artistic or Pedagogical Diploma is 3 years.
During your studies at Prayner, you must attend your main subject along with the complementary subjects (both theoretical and practical) required for your chosen course.
At certain stages within your main subject, an exam must be performed before an examining panel. Students graduate from the Artistic Diploma upon successfully passing the Artistic Diploma examination before an examining panel. Students graduate from the Diplomas in Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy by passing the Teacher Qualification examination before an examining panel. Since lessons at Prayner are taught in German, we recommend all students to attend a German language course before they begin their studies.
Students of Prayner Conservatoire graduate with an internationally recognised and state- approved Artistic Diploma upon completion of their studies. All of the Artistic Diploma courses we have on offer are governmentally approved. Similarly, students on Pedagogical (Teacher Training) courses receive a state-approved Certificate of Educational Competence upon graduating from their studies.
The requirements for students to complete their Artistic / Pedagogical Diplomas are held to an emphatically high standard in order to meet the demands of working in the music industry.
Please consult our website for the tuition fees. For most Artistic Diploma courses, the tuition fees for one full academic year are €2100 for non-EU students and €1880 for EU students: this covers 1 weekly lesson in your main subject and includes all complementary subjects (additional fees apply for certain complementary subjects, such as Piano, Italian and Speech).
EU-students can pay their fees on a monthly basis, non-EU students have to pay their fees at least on a semesterly basis. The entrance examination fee is €50. The annual registration fee is €100. The tuition fees are fixed at a higher rate for the following courses (meaning that the advance payment sum for the first semester will also be correspondingly higher): Opera / Operatic Repertoire / Operetta / Musical Theatre / Conducting / Instrumental or Vocal Pedagogy.
Please note: students at Austrian conservatoires who require an Austrian student residence permit (visa) must apply for the residence permit known as the “Schülervisum” (and not for the “Studentenvisum”!). The “Schülervisum” also covers students who are not yet within the core study level (“Hauptstudium”).
For certain nationalities (e.g. USA, Japan, South Korea), the application for the “Schülervisum” can be made in Austria. Please check directly with the Austrian embassy (consulate) in your home country whether you are permitted to stay in Austria whilst making the application or whether you are required to make the application from your home country.
In order to apply for the “Schülervisum” residence permit, you need confirmation of enrolment at Prayner, health insurance which covers all risks, secure living maintenance (the financial means to be able to live and support yourself in Austria) and accommodation. Depending on your nationality, the authorities may require further documentation.
PLEASE NOTE: If a registered student decides NOT to study after applying for the “Schülervisum” residence permit, or is denied this residence permit for reasons which do not concern Prayner Conservatoire (e.g. because of lack of finances, insurance…), a cancellation fee will apply. The student must provide Prayner Conservatoire with proof that they have been denied the “Schülervisum” residence permit, or must bring confirmation from the authorities that their application for the “Schülervisum” residence permit has been withdrawn.
