About Us

The fully licensed Prayner Conservatory of Mag. Josef Schmid in Vienna was founded as a private institution in 1905 for music and dramatic art and was granted public status by the Federal Ministry of Education on 31st March 1958. As an internationally renowned educational centre with long-standing tradition, the conservatory offers over 900 students from over 60 different countries a well-grounded and practical Artistic Diploma course of study in a wide range of disciplines within the fields of Classical and Jazz music.

Our Aims & Values

Our students are encouraged as part of their music studies to become experienced concert performers and we place great value on giving them regular opportunities to perform – both as soloists and as ensemble members. The aims and values which guide our Conservatory are as follows:

•    To regard all musical styles as equal.
•    To encourage individual talents and interests.
•    To combine professionalism with a passion for music-making.

Our teachers consider it their duty to actively support and assist their students throughout the course of their studies and to prepare their students for careers as professional musicians and performance artists.

To this end we have various practice and tuition rooms on hand for our students, as well as concert and performance venues. This includes the historically significant Ehrbarsaal auditorium with superior acoustics, which is of particular value to our students.
